Significance of Dussehra (Vijaydashami) Festival

Dussehra (Vijaydashami) is celebrated on tenth day of Shukla paksha (waxing moon) of Ashwin month according to Hindu calendar. It is celebrated as victory of Lord Ram over Demon King Ravan as well as the victory of Mother Goddess Durga over Demon King Mahishasur. Goddess Durga fought with demon Mahishasur for 9 days and on tenth day she killed Mahishasur. So, Dussehra is 10 days celebration festival. Another reason for celebrate Dussehra festival is to please Mother Goddess Durga because, the new harvest season starts at this time.  In order to make the soil fertile and get good crop for the year, devotees and farmers perform Durga Puja to please Mother Goddess to draw divine cosmic force to the soil.

Rituals and Celebrations related to Dussehra

In Jaipur, Dussehra festival is celebrated by burning giant size effigy of demon king Ravan at night at various public places. Dussehra Fair is organized at these places. Dussehra Fair is one of the largest fairs in Jaipur. An auspicious rally of Lord Shri Ram is processed on the same day at evening time. The rally starts from nearby Temple and ends at Dussehra Fair place. The rally has many tableaus and tableaux related to life of Lord Shri Ram. When the rally reached to the Dussehra Fair place, the giant size effigy of Ravan is burned with fire, crackers and fireworks. People try to get victory over their ill thoughts and ill wills on this day, just like Lord Shri Ram got victory over demon king Ravan.
