Gangaur festival starts in Jaipur on Tritiya tithi (3rd day) of Krishna paksha (waning moon) of Chaitra month (March-April) and ends on Tritiya tithi (3rd day) of Shukla paksha (waxing moon) of Chaitra month. Hence, Gangaur festival is celebrated in Jaipur for 16 days. "Gangaur" is the combination of two words "Gana" and "Gaur". "Gana" stands for Lord Shiva, and "Gaur" is the synonym of goddess "Gauri" or "Parvati". In Indian state of Rajasthan, married women worship goddess Gauri for long life and good health of their husbands, whereas unmarried women worship her for being blessed good husband. On the 16th day, a royal and amazing procession of goddess Gangaur proceeds in Jaipur. Thousands of foreign tourists specially travel Jaipur to watch the Gangaur procession every year.

जयपुर में गणगौर का त्यौंहार चैत्र माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि को प्रारंभ होता है, जो कि चैत्र माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया तिथि को सम्पूर्ण होता है. इस प्रकार जयपुर में गणगौर का त्यौंहार १६ दिन तक मनाया जाता है. "गणगौर" शब्द मूलतः दो शब्दों, "गण" तथा "गौर" से मिल कर बना है. यहाँ "गण" का अर्थ है भगवान शिव तथा "गौर" का अर्थ है माता "गौरी" या "पार्वती". भारत के राजस्थान राज्य में विवाहित महिलाएं माता पार्वती की पूजा अपने पति की लंबी आयु और अच्छे स्वास्थ्य के लिये करती हैं, जबकि अविवाहित युवतियाँ ये पूजा मनपसंद वर (पति) पाने के लिये करतीं हैं. इस त्यौंहार के १६वें दिन जयपुर में बड़ी ही ठाट-बाट और रजवाडी शान से माता गणगौर की सवारी निकलती है एवं मेला भरता है. गणगौर की सवारी का जयपुर में पर्यटन की दृष्टि से बहुत महत्व है, क्योंकि प्रत्येक वर्ष हजारों की संख्या में विदेशी पर्यटक विशेष तौर पर गणगौर की सवारी और मेला देखने के लिये ही दूर-दूर से जयपुर आते हैं.
